The December meme (list of prompts here) continues with Day 07 → talk about music this year

Apart from losing David Bowie and Prince this year I don't think there was much that stood out for me.  I did discover Birdy who has the most haunting voice and mostly that's because this tune was used as a background to a rather odd advert for one of our high street banks

You Tube link to Birdy )

My main musical discovery this year though was Amazon Prime music which is fabulous.  Streaming music is definitely the way things are going and I really like the Playlists which are available by genre or mood.  My favourite playlist on there at the moment is 'Happy Songs' which are just so much fun.  Of course one of Birdy's albums is on there too and the bonus is that you can also have the lyrics on screen I may occasionally sing along.  I think amongst my friends (who are all around my age group) I am quite unusual as I do listen to contemporary music a lot. My friends all seem to listen to what I would have considered the 'oldie' stations when I was younger ;)  Youngest Cee often recommends bands I wouldn't normally listen to as well which is fun.

Today's question is: Put your music player on shuffle and write the first 3 songs that play and what your initial thought is.

My initial thought is "that is a really long question..."

In other news my back is a little better - I don't feel the need to walk around rather than sitting down which was good as I got to go to my stained glass class this morning. It's the last one before the half term break - which is lucky as our poor teacher has broken her foot which is why last week's class was cancelled. It's not a serious break, and she can put weight on her foot, but she could do with next week being a break from teaching poor thing!

Our house move is progressing - the surveyor from our buyers wants to visit on Thursday morning for a valuation survey. We can't have our surveyor visit the bungalow until the last few things have been finished by the builders. Mr Cee is on the case!

What band or musician is most important to you.

Well, along with almost all the entries I've seen for this prompt I am going to say I don't have a specific band or musician that I listen to.  I have very ecclectic taste and I'm enjoying having Amazon Prime music so I can listen to playlists by genre without buying the music.  I like jazz, blues, pop, funk, musical theatre, soundtracks, country, western and indy.  I don't like classical music (as in Mahler or Beethoven), punk, hard rock or rap, but there are always exceptions to that rule.  I have a huge amount of music - we buy on CD and upload as I get twitchy about not having the originals to pass on to the kids once we go, so I rarely download anything, but having said that I'm sure they will never 'own' music and will stream it in the future (who knows!).  In fact we are already living in the future as far as I'm concerned as I was brought up listening to the 'wireless' and vinyl records.

The only thing I would say is that it's a shame we no longer have Top of the Pops on our TVs in the UK as half the time I like a song and I have literally no idea what the artist(s) look like!  I used to know who everyone looked like when that was on TV.

So that's a pretty much non-answer.  Sorry! :)

In other news Mr Cee and I were sitting having coffee first thing this morning thinking it would be a weekend without anyone wanting to see our house as the agent hadn't been in touch, and lo and behold we get a viewing booked for this afternoon and another one tomorrow.  This afternoon's couple have just left.  They looked around the house in just over 10 minutes, didn't want to go into the garden and didn't ask any questions.  They either loved it or hated it..... I'm sure we'll find out at some point LOL!

Tomorrow's viewer was supposed to come and see the house back when it was first on the market at the end of January, and booked in and then cancelled their slot the day before.  I expect they have been looking at quite a lot of houses since then, so that could be interesting.

This evening we are going to our neighbours for dinner, wine and much hilarity playing silly card games.  Should be fun!

Happy Saturday :)

5. 10 songs you love right now.

I'm rubbish at songs - I find myself singing along with them and have no idea who they are by! I blame the lack of Top of the Pops which used to be on TV and sadly the weekly show was cancelled after a very long run!

Anyway - in no particular order these are some catchy numbers I rather like (I do have rather wide tastes in music - be warned!), clicky the names for links to YouTube (may not work outside UK, sorry!):

George Michael - Star People unplugged : Just love this toe tapper
Katy Perry - Roar : hate the video, but the song is humm-able
Elvis - Baby What Do you want me to do : I think we always forget Elvis could play a mean guitar!
Murray Gold - All The Strange Creatures : I love Murray Gold's composing, it's got such depth (this is from DW Series 3)
Naughty Boy - La La La featuring Sam Smith : catchy catchy catchy!!
Gotye - Somebody that I used to know : I liked this when it first came out, and it's still good
Christina Aguilera - Candyman : I like the retro/modern mix of this one
Robert Downey Jr - A Man Like Me : RDJ only released one album, and it's a shame because he can sing really well (he also wrote some of the songs AND plays the piano - if I wasn't married already....!)
Sting and Robert Downey Jr - Driven to Tears : I love this - two of my favourite men, at Sting's 60th birthday party!
Imagine Dragons - Radioactive : Youngest Cee lent me this album and I was pleasantly surprised, this is my favourite track.

Well there's 10!

During 2008 -

- My Mum slipped down the stairs and broke her leg, but made a remarkable recovery!
- I avoided getting landed on by a plane
- Rather too many teenagers were killed or attacked by knives some very close to where I live
- I went a LOT greener with solar panels which so far have meant large savings on heating our water
- I bought far too many gadgets, but recycled lots of other stuff
- I made far fewer icons and manips and was very busy with work-stuff
- I quit my job for something (I hope) is better, but kept some teaching because I love doing it
- I got fat

I don't really make resolutions, but I'd quite like to not be so fat so I think that's the only thing I'll set myself a goal for.

I hope everyone has a good celebration if you do that kind of thing (we don't tend to bother).

I wish health, happiness and less stress for you all in 2009 and that whatever you want the most happens for you.

Under the cut - music, because you can't leave 2008 without toe tapping stuff!

I like 'em both, but Duffy has the edge for me.

Dare you not to tap your feet....

Very nice debut from Sam Sparro.

"Cottonmouth" is also on YouTube - if you ignore his 'dancing' and listen to the music it's cool. He reminds me a bit of Beck.

He also has a free 'mix tape' of songs you can download here

Duffy (no, not the one that's been played endlessly - this is "Syrup and Honey").

Heee!

I have a ticket for the Union Chapel gig - and even better, one of the two groups of students I teach that day are on their work placement which means I can definitely get there with plenty of time to spare because my working day is shorter! :D *happy*

cut for family ramblings )

Hope everyone else is having a good weekend so far :) I really fancy chocolate cake right now.... ;)

[livejournal.com profile] ukchrisp pointed me in the direction of Nick Hinton who is a very talented young singer/songwriter well worth listening to.

His EPs on iTunes can be downloaded if you like what he's got on his MySpace site.
